This day is celebrated as Shaheed Diwas to honour their supreme sacrifice for the country.

History of 30 January – Shaheed Diwas

30 January holds a very important and sad place in Indian history. This day is known as one of the darkest days in India because on 30 January 1948, India lost its beloved Bapu – Mahatma Gandhi.

On that evening, Mahatma Gandhi was going to attend the daily prayer meeting at Birla House (now Gandhi Smriti) in New Delhi. While walking towards the prayer ground, a man named Nathuram Godse came forward and shot Gandhiji three times in the chest and stomach. Gandhiji fell down and passed away shortly after.

Many people believe that Gandhiji’s last words were “Hey Ram”.

Nathuram Godse was later arrested, tried in court, and hanged in 1949 for this crime.

Since that tragic day, every year on 30 January, the whole country observes Shaheed Diwas (also called Martyrs’ Day) to pay respectful tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

Importance of 30 January – Shaheed Diwas

This day is a symbol of peace, non-violence, and truth.

People remember Gandhiji’s teachings and get inspired to follow his ideals in life.

It reminds us of the sacrifices made for India’s freedom.

On this day, the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Defence Minister, chiefs of the three armed forces, and other dignitaries visit Raj Ghat (Gandhiji’s memorial) in Delhi to offer flowers and pay homage.

Two minutes of silence is observed across the country at 11 AM to honour his memory.

Shaheed Diwas Celebration by SK Vision Foundation

On 30 January 2024, SK Vision Foundation organized a special Shaheed Diwas program to remember Mahatma Gandhi. The event was held at Udayan Care Boys Home, an organization that provides shelter and care to orphaned and homeless children.

On this occasion, a drawing and painting competition was organized for the children. The theme was the country and patriotism (Desh Bhakti). The children participated with great enthusiasm and created beautiful artwork.

At the end of the competition, the children who performed the best were rewarded with medals and certificates.

Through this program, SK Vision Foundation aimed to:

Build self-confidence in the children

Teach them the importance of Shaheed Diwas

Explain Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of truth and non-violence

Tell them about the freedom movements led by Gandhiji and how he helped India get independence

At the end of the event, food and refreshments were distributed among all the children and staff, and the program concluded on a happy and meaningful note.

This small but heartfelt initiative by SK Vision Foundation helped the children understand the value of sacrifice, patriotism, and Mahatma Gandhi’s everlasting message of peace.

What is Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs’ Day)?
